Description
Perception Kayaks designed the Pescador 10 to serve as a stable, fairly streamlined and easy-to-handle craft, intended to serve kayakers who aren’t willing to spend the “big bucks” for a cumbersome, feature-packed kayak for long trips. It is a confidence-building, forgiving boat that lets you relax and start paddling or casting lines.
Size and Weight
The Pescador is 10’6″ (323 cm) long with a 32″ (81 cm) beam and 14″ (36 cm) deck height. It is a lightweight boat of 57 lbs (26 kg), making it manageable for loading it onto the car top racks or the truck bed. The compact size also allows better storage opportunities
The Pescador fares well in the 10-foot-kayak category having the maximum capacity of 325 lbs (147 kg). Its load limit outweighs some similar-sized boats such as the Perception Tribe 9.5. Even though bigger paddlers buy the boat and are happy with their experience, this model is better suited for people of average or smaller stature who do not exceed 80 percent of the kayak’s total weight capacity.
Materials
Perception makes their kayaks from a proprietary High-Density Polyethylene material using the company-specific, one-piece rotational molding technology. The process involves pouring beads of polyethylene into the mold, which gets heated up and slowly rotated so that the material fills up every nook and cranny. After the mold cools down, you get a one-piece, leak-proof construction that is extremely rugged and durable.
Features
The Pescador 10 features an uncluttered deck with two molded grab handles in the front and rear, as well as two molded-in grips on the sides. Another benefit of the flat deck is that it offers unlimited possibilities to add custom gear to places you find most convenient for your fishing style.
It features an oversized oval bow hatch that provides access to the in-hull storage where you can stow your fishing rods and plenty of gear.
Its spacious cockpit with dimensions (LxW) of 21″x21″ integrates a molded center console with a molded mount recess that fits a 1.5″ Perception Solo Mount Base which you can accessorize upon personal preference. The console also includes a cup holder.
Two YakAttack gear tracks let you mount a fish finder, a GoPro, a swivel rod holder, or any custom accessory you may need on the water.
The Pescador 10 offers another molded recess in front of the seat, leaving owners with the option to easily insert a 6″ day hatch.
The molded seat features Perception’s Comfort Seating System (CSS). The seat base and backrest are padded with a thick, lightweight EVA foam that enables better ventilation. The backseat side straps allow additional adjustments, but quite a few seat reviews from YouTubers point out the need for an extra cushion for the base seat and lumbar support pad.
As most Perception kayaks, behind the seat, there are two molded-in rod holders that are virtually useless for their purpose due to being too shallow and too wide to safely hold your rods or nets. If you are using short, beginner fishing poles we strongly advise tethering them with bungees.
Pescador 10 includes sizeable, bungee-secured rear tankwell that fits a crate or cooler along with more gear and tackle, as well as a paddle park on the left-hand side.
The final feature is the replaceable skid plate that protects the stern keel during portaging.
Performance
The Pescador 10 hull is designed for stability and straight tracking. It features a short keel on the bow and stern, flat bottom with eight scupper holes to drain the water, and rounded sides with soft chines. This is a boat that will keep you dry and stable if you maintain a low center of gravity. It offers excellent primary stability, but the secondary balance is more complementary to the environment.
Hence, you cannot expect to stand up and cast lines in this boat. Stability can be challenged if you enter a spot with strong, curvy currents or when exposed to strong winds. For the most part, this kayak handles all reasonable weather conditions pretty well.
The boat does not require additional customizations to improve or correct maneuverability or tracking. This agile little boat can pull you through all those tights, streams, rivers or lakes, building your confidence with every passing mile.
Being a bit short for a 32″ beam means that this kayak cannot maintain speed unless you paddle.
If you need to cover long distances, prepare yourself for some hard paddling or consider buying the 12-foot version of the Pescador instead.
