Description
Size and Weight
The Old Town Loon 106 Angler measures a solid 10’6” (3.2 m), which is a good compromise between tracking performance, interior space, and portability. It also has a sizable 17.5” (44.5 cm) deck height, offering plenty of legroom for tall paddlers.
As far as heftiness goes, the Loon 106 Angler’s 54 lb (24.5 kg) weight is somewhat high for a boat this size. The similarly-sized Wilderness Systems Pungo 105 is just 47 lbs (21 kg). However, it’s important to keep in mind that the Loon 106 Angler has some fishing-specific features that increase its overall weight.
Capacity
With a decent 325 lb (147.4 kg) weight capacity, the Loon 106 Angler is strong enough to accommodate most paddlers, as well as a day’s worth of gear and fish.
Even if loaded to 80% of its weight capacity (which is usually recommended for best performance), this boat can still support 260 lbs (117.9 kg) of total weight. This is pretty good for most day trips as long as you go light on gear.
Features
If you’re looking for a boat that keeps things simple but has everything you need for a day of fishing, the Loon 106 Angler is ready to answer the call.
The kayak has two flush-mounted rod holders which are angled backwards to keep your rods out of the way. A paddle clip on the side will hold your paddle while you fish or take a break.
Additionally, the Loon 106 Angler has an anchor trolley system built right in. An anchor trolley is super convenient when fishing in current or wind.
This boat also has ample gear storage space in its rear bulkhead, which sports a click-on dry hatch cover. To help you keep your most important gear accessible, the Loon 106 Angler has a removable workdeck that also includes a USB charging port.
To keep you comfortable during long days on the water, Old Town outfitted this boat with their top-of-the-line Active Comfort System 2.0 Seat. This seat is well padded and easy to adjust so you can get the right amount of support.
Performance
Due to its shorter length, this boat isn’t the best tracking kayak out there. However, the sharp keel does help it track better than it would if it had a completely rounded hull.
The hull is quite flat and wide towards the center. Therefore, it performs best on calm water where primary stability is the most important.
The rounded hull on the Loon 106 Angler also improves its maneuverability. This is particularly critical in near coastal regions and shallow, rocky areas where being able to make tight turns to get to the fish is key.
