Size and Weight

The Old Town Loon 120 measures up at 12’ (3.6 m) long, which is fairly lengthy by recreational kayak standards but not unmanageable in transport. It also has a tall deck height of 15.25” (38.7cm) and a spacious cockpit to ensure that you don’t feel cramped as you paddle.

With a weight of 54 lbs (24.5 kg), the Loon 120 has the exact same proportions as the Perception JoyRide 12.0. While it’s certainly not the lightest kayak on the market, it’s still more than manageable in transport. Thanks to its bow and stern handles, this boat is relatively simple to carry to and from the water, and it is a reasonable enough weight to lift onto the top of a vehicle with the help of a friend.

Capacity

Thanks to its maximum capacity of 375 lbs (170 kg), the Loon 120 is a solid choice for the majority of paddlers. In fact, this boat has a larger capacity than the Wilderness Systems Pungo 120, which can carry up to 325 lbs (147.4 kg).

The Loon 120 also comes fully equipped to carry gear, thanks to its stern dry hatch, cockpit day hatch, and deck bungees. After taking into account that one shouldn’t load a boat past 80% of its stated maximum weight limit, this kayak is ideal for long day trips and short overnights where the total weight in the boat is less than 300 lbs (136.1 kg).

Features

When it comes to features, the Loon 120 is truly in a league of its own.

In addition to its spacious cockpit, Old Town gave this boat an Active Comfort System 2.0 Seat, which is the most advanced comfort-specific seat that they make. This seat is ergonomically designed and has a fully-adjustable backrest for ample lumbar support on the water.

Plus, it comes with a removable work deck that provides a protected storage space for your most important gear. The work deck also has a USB port so you can keep your gear charged during longer days of paddling.

Other notable features of the Loon 120 include its paddle clip, which can be used to safeguard your paddle when you stop for a break. It also comes with a built-in drain plug to remove any water that gets into the hull.

Performance

Although it was designed primarily with comfort in mind, Old Town didn’t slack off in terms of performance with the Loon 120. Featuring a rounded hull for ample stability, as well as a sharp keel line for slicing through waves, this boat is a solid all-around recreational kayak in terms of performance on flat and slightly choppy water.

As a result of its longer length (12’/3.6m), the Loon 120 tracks very well in flat conditions. For additional comfort, this boat features a Support Track Foot Brace System and built-in thigh pads. That way, you can get more control over the kayak as you try to maneuver or track the boat in slightly rougher conditions.
