Pelican Rise 100X
The lowest-priced 10-foot kayak by Pelican, the Rise 100X is an interesting option for those on a budget.
If you’re on a budget but still want the stability, low weight and sturdiness we’ve come to expect from Pelican recreational kayaks, definitely take a look at Pelican Rise 100X. It is the most affordable of Pelican’s 10-foot kayaks but it does not really compromise on features or performance.
Size and Weight
Pelican Rise 100X is 10 ft (305 cm) long by 28 in. (71 cm) wide and has a deck height of 14 in. (36 cm). The kayak weighs 38 lbs (17.4 kg), which makes it a little heavier than Pelican Trailblazer 100 NXT but still totally manageable for an average adult.
Just like most other 10-foot models by Pelican, the Rise can hold up to 275 lbs (125 kg). This includes you, your clothes and all the gear you want to take along. Be careful not to exceed the max weight limit. For better performance, it’s a good idea to stay within 80 percent of the kayak’s capacity.
Like most Pelican models, Pelican Rise 100X is made of RAM-X material using thermoforming technology. RAM-X is a three-layer sheet of high-density polyethylene. A sheet of RAM-X is heated up and stretched over a mold using vacuum. Two parts of the hull are then melted together, creating a strong bond.
Don’t be afraid that your kayak will leak or come apart at the seams. The seams are the strongest part of the hull!
Front to back, Pelican Rise 100X comes with a carry handle on the bow and a small front platform with a bungee cord where you can put stuff you might need on the water (don’t forget a dry bag). There’s a simple molded organizer in front of the cockpit for small items that you want to be at hand.
Behind the seat, there’s a large hatch that provides access to a rear storage compartment. The hatch is not waterproof and is only held in place by a bungee cord, so make sure you put all of your stuff inside dry bags.
The cockpit opening is the largest among Pelican’s 10-foot kayaks. It measures as much as 54.8 in. (139 cm) by 25 in. (63.5 cm). If you like the feeling of a large open cockpit, do take a look at Pelican Rise.
The seat has basic Ergobase soft padding and an adjustable cushioned Ergoform backrest. It’s not the best seat but it provides adequate comfort for short recreational trips.
Pelican Rise 100X shares the same twin-arched multi-chine hull that you’ll find in other recreational models by Pelican. This hull is very popular among beginners, mainly because of its great primary stability. You’ll feel safe and relaxed in this kayak. Just don’t forget that this boat is made strictly for flat, calm waters. Stay away from waves, wind, or fast-moving rivers.
The multi-chine hull provides decent tracking ability and reasonable speed for this length (remember that the longer the boat, the faster it will usually be).
There are two styrofoam blocks next to the seat. Do not remove them, because they support the structure of the kayak and act as floatation blocks if the boat gets swamped. It is also a good idea to have some extra floatation such as a float bag in the nose. Remember that a sit-inside kayak can sink if filled with water. Sit-on-top kayaks are usually safer because they don’t get swamped if they capsize and they are easier to get into from the water.
Pelican Rise 100 NXT comes with a limited lifetime warranty for the hull and a 1-year limited warranty for pre-installed accessories. For more information about Pelican’s warranty terms, click here.
