Size and Weight

Being 10 ft (305 cm) long, one may think it is as modestly sized as the Cove 100XP and other entry level kayaks from Pelican. But this is not the case. The Coast 100XP has a width of 30.5 in (77 cm) and a height of 16 in (41 cm). These dimensions contribute to the considerable storage space that is featured in this model.

A larger vessel will naturally be much heavier. As with most Pelican kayaks, the same robust RAM-XTM Premium multi-layer polyethylene is used to construct the Coast 100XP. This ensures it remains light with an impressive weight of only 49 lb (22 kg).

This is not the lightest kayak on the market. But when you consider the size of the boat, you come to appreciate the engineering skills used to ensure it weighs less than 50 pounds.

Capacity

As a single seater, one would expect a comparatively larger maximum load capacity from a much heavier boat. The Coast 100XP can astonishingly carry a maximum load of 325 lb (147 kg). This allows one the opportunity to travel with gear for two- or three-day trips without sacrificing maneuverability or stability.

Additionally, those who consider themselves heavy or large will be satisfied with this capacity coupled with the open layout seating provided by the vessel.

Features

There are two primary storage compartments on this kayak; one at either end of it. At the bow, you will find a relatively large quick lock hatch. Gear can be effortlessly stored here and will be within easy reach. A simple quarter turn of the latch is enough to open and close the hatch, making it the more secure storage option of the two.

The secondary storage option is located just behind the seat. A large tank well is complemented by robust bungee cords. It is significantly deeper than the tank wells found in most kayaks. This makes the kayak suitable for multiple-day trips.

Despite the considerable storage space, the organization of it is extremely poor. There are not any conveniently placed compartments besides the dual position bottle holder. Perhaps it is because this vessel is a sit-on-top kayak. But more compartments, like molded paddle rests and flush-mount or swivel rod holders, would have been greatly appreciated.

The greatest feature on the Coast 100XR is the seat comfort. The popular Ergocast SB Seating Systemâ„¢ is both comfortable and convenient. It includes an easily adjustable backrest to provide postural support on those long journeys. It is crafted from a breathable mesh material that ensures it remains functional; even after prolonged use.

It can also be removed and used anywhere you may need comfortable seating. Being lightweight, this makes it suitable for camping trips or hiking with after docking your kayak.

Portability is an important consideration you should make when choosing a kayak to purchase. Having a lightweight construction is a huge benefit, but it also helps if a kayak has features that make it easier to transport. The Coast 100XR has a pair of carrying handles located on either side of the kayak. There is also a drain plug at the stern.

Performance

The Coast 100XR has been conceived with a twin-arched multi chine hull design. This contributes to the exceptional stability that Pelican kayaks are renowned for. Maneuverability is made easy by the lightweight construction. This kayak offers great tracking and can be mastered relatively quickly.
