Pelican Sentinel 100X
If you’re thinking of trying out recreational kayaking in a sit-on-top boat that offers plenty of storage, you’d do well to check out Pelican Sentinel 100X.
Offering excellent material and construction durability at a low price, Pelican designed the Sentinel 100X for beginner paddlers that can find their balance and style while having fun.
Size and Weight
Pelican Sentinel 100X measures 10 ft (305 cm) in length, 30 in (76 cm) width and deck height of 13.25 in (33 cm). At a weight of only 40 lbs (18 kg), you can transport and store this kayak anywhere with ease. To illustrate how lightweight and optimized is the Sentinel’s weight balance, we can compare it to the Pelican Rise 100X who’s four inches shorter and yet slightly heavier than the Sentinel.
Having a weight capacity of 300 lbs (136 kg) means that this kayak can carry all the gear and accessories you need to spend a whole day exploring flat lakes and slow rivers with no fuss about transportation. However, it is advisable to make sure you don’t exceed 80 percent of the total carrying capacity if you prefer having a dry ride to the best of the kayak’s abilities.
Like many other Pelican models, the Argo 80X is made of RAM-X material, which is a three-layer sheet of high-density polyethylene. The kayak is made using thermoforming technology. A sheet of RAM-X is heated up and stretched over a mold using vacuum. Two parts of the hull are then melted together, creating a strong bond.
Don’t be afraid that your kayak will leak or come apart at the seams. The seams are the strongest part of the hull!
Pelican Sentinel 100X comes with two toggle carrying handles on each end and two molded grips on the sides. Six scupper holes and a draining plug help with draining the water that enters the kayak.
Sentinel’s features are basic but useful. In the front, small tankwell with a bungee can fit your backpack or other on-hand gear you need.
Sentinel’s open and spacious cockpit features four molded footrests and three paddle stagers on each gunnel. The molded central console features a recess for mounting a Scotty gear base and a dual-position bottle holder.
The seating area features the adjustable ERGOFORM™ padded backrest and seat base. If you’re planning on spending more than a couple of hours in the kayak, we strongly advise you to bring extra pad or cushion for the seat and lumbar support pad for the back.
Behind the seat, Pelican Sentinel 100X comes with a decent-sized tankwell covered with a stretch mesh covers to hold your gear in place. It can comfortably accommodate a crate or cooler. Admittedly, there is no shortage of storage space and flat surfaces if you want to custom accessorize the kayak.
Like many other Pelican models, Sentinel 100X features the versatile twin-arched multi-chine hull. With a beamwidth of 30 inches (76 cm), the kayak boasts remarkable primary stability and full contact on the water.
The tracking channels allow excellent steering and maintain a straight line in calm water conditions. If you’re paddling sheltered lakes and slow-moving rivers with no or light wind, you will certainly enjoy a relaxing trip.
Being 10 ft long means that the Sentinel 100X is easy to maneuver and turn, but it isn’t particularly fast. If you want to experience a sportier kayak that can pick up speed and cover more distance, perhaps you should have a look at longer models such as the Pelican Sentinel 120X.
Another advantage of the Pelican Sentinel 100X is the added flotation inside the hull, which increases the kayak’s buoyancy and safety.
Pelican Rise 100 NXT comes with a limited lifetime warranty for the hull and a 1-year limited warranty for pre-installed accessories. For more information about Pelican’s warranty terms, click here.
