The Pelican Cove 100XP is a beginner-level kayak that has been designed with great attention to detail. This vessel will satisfy the most discerning recreational kayakers. It has a plethora of features you would only expect from more expensive products. For the price, the Cove 100XP has a compelling value proposition that makes it a viable option to consider.
Description
Size and Weight
At 10 ft (305 cm) long, 28 in. (71 cm) wide, and 14 in. (36 cm) high, the Cove 100XP is configured to be relatively compact without compromising storage space or seating comfort.
It is impressive how Pelican kept the weight of the Cove 100XP at only 38 lb (17.2) kilograms. The lightweight and patented RAM-X™ PREMIUM material is the primary reason for this. It offers better durability than the industry standard but maintains the lightweight construction Pelican kayaks are renowned for.
Capacity
Capacity on the Cove 100XP is decent. Its maximum load capacity is 275 lb (125 kilograms). Despite this being enough for most people, one would expect Pelican to ensure the vessel can take on more weight. Because it is designed with more storage options than comparably sized kayaks, a greater load capacity would seem a logical feature to include.
Features
The most impressive feat on the Cove 100XP is the extensive storage options. At the bow, a dedicated storage area is equipped with bungee cords. A tank well would have been a better option, but this could have compromised the kayak’s performance.
A quick lock hatch is located behind the seat. Instead of being fastened by bungee cord—which can be a great inconvenience at times—this hatch has a lock mechanism. It is also considerably large, which allows you to store more gear or fishing tackle than you would on similarly sized kayaks.
A pet peeve that seasoned kayakers have is the lack of smaller storage compartments in and around the cockpit. Pelican have resolved this in the Cove 100XP. The cockpit table includes a bottle holder to keep your hydrating fluids close by. This is standard in most kayaks, but more storage compartments are offered by this vessel.
Paddle rests are featured. The importance of these cannot be emphasized enough. The rolling over of paddles on kayaks without dedicated paddle rests can become irritating. Fishing rod mounts, located behind the seat, are another welcome feature. It is very annoying to accommodate both a paddle and a fishing rod on kayaks without built-in storage areas for them.
The Cove 100XP has seating features expected of higher end models. The highlight of these features is the Ergofit G2 system. This is an ergonomically designed seating system that contains an adjustable backrest and a plush seat cushion.
In addition, premium knee pads are included and adjustable footrests make the vessel suitable for considerably tall people too.
The drain plug and carrying handles ensure that packing the Cove 100XP after an adventure-filled day is a hassle free task.
Performance
The Cove 100XP is crafted with a twin-arched multi chine hull design. This helps create the stability that Pelican kayaks have developed a reputation for. This is done while ensuring there is an acceptable level of maneuverability and speed. The kayak is good at tracking and allows for quick mastery too.
