Description
Size, weight, capacity
The StraitEdge is 9 ft. 8 in. (295 cm) long and 35 in. (89 cm) wide. These dimensions may not be the most streamlined, but give it an enormous amount of stability to cope with choppy conditions.
The maximum capacity of this kayak is 300 lbs. (136 kg), suitable for most adults and a small amount of equipment.
Portability is key when getting to your favorite beach or river. The StraitEdge weighs just 34 lbs. (15 kg), light enough to get into remote spots for an idyllic paddle.
Features
The aluminum struts at the bow and stern of the StraitEdge give this boat a rigidity and hull shape similar to a solid sit-on-top. The bow cuts through waves seamlessly, and a slight bow rocker gives you a drier ride. This shape also improves the tracking of the StraitEdge.
Internal self-bailers can be opened or closed, depending on conditions. If you’re paddling on the lake, simply close the ports and enjoy a high and dry ride. In the river or surf, keeping these open will stop you filling up and dragging through the water.
The whole boat is made from heavy duty PVC, designed to withstand the hardships that come from a day on the river. This puncture resistant material gives you peace of mind as you bounce off rocks.
A high backed seating system with fully adjustable backrest keeps you comfortable on the water, while the shape of the floor gives you a drier seat.
Internal top deck bungee is in place for storage and there are D-rings which make this boat thigh-strap compatible. Rod holders complete the set up, for amateur anglers who want a stable platform to fish from.
Performance
The StraitEdge is Advanced Element’s answer to a multi-purpose sit on top kayak. This is a really strong, portable kayak which is easy to set up. You can get from car to river in a matter of minutes, just unfold and inflate.
On the water, the durability and ease of this boat make it suitable for paddling up to grade III rivers, as well as playing around in ocean surf and open water. The self-bailing design stops you filling up, so you can focus more on paddling.
At the bow and stern, the aluminum ribs do improve the kayak’s feel and response. They also go some way to improve the tracking, though the addition of a removable fin would make this a far better open water kayak than it currently is. All in all, this is more suited to rivers and surf than it is to open water.
The seating system, though supportive, does lack a solid base and can quickly become uncomfortable. The additional thigh braces definitely improve the responsiveness of this kayak.
