Size, weight, capacity

At 9 ft. 5 in. (2.8 m), the Malibu 9.5 is a relatively compact model. Length is often the biggest barrier when it comes to storing and moving your kayak around on the land. The Malibu 9.5 gives you the speed you might expect from a longer kayak, but without the storage issues that are associated with such models.

The Malibu is a relatively broad kayak, with a beam of 33 in. (83.8 cm). While this does give it a good level of stability, some smaller framed kayakers may struggle to reach over the sides to paddle efficiently and may need a lengthy, low-angle paddle.

The Malibu weighs 54 lbs. (24.5 kg). While this isn’t the lightest boat, it’s light enough to move freely on and off your car, or out the back of your truck, though a partner certainly makes it easier.

The Malibu 9.5 has a capacity of 325 lbs. (147.7 kg), suited to the mid weight paddler with a reasonable amount of equipment.

Features

The Malibu has a whole host of features which set it apart as a recreational kayak. Initially of note, the hull is designed to be stackable, so all of the features are strong enough and flexible enough to take the weight of a stack of kayaks on top.

The AirGo seat system gives the paddler enough air flow that they can paddle comfortably all day without overheating. The padded design of this system conforms to your form, giving you a comfortable cruise, while the adjustable high backrest keeps you supported.

Molded footrests give you a range of options depending on whether you want a relaxed or engaged position. There are also molded-in calf rests to increase support and connection with the kayak; a necessity for control.

Just ahead of the seat is a splash-proof hatch. This storage will keep your gear dry in the rain or in any waves which break over the side of your kayak, but isn’t necessarily watertight in the event of a swamped kayak.

At the bow and stern of the Malibu 9.5, there are recesses for storing your gear. These are secured with highly visible bungee. Molded in paddle rests give you somewhere to leave your paddle while you take a rest or take photos of your trip.

Three molded in cupholders give plenty of beverage opportunities. At the rear of the Malibu is a locking bar, so you can secure your stack of kayaks while they’re stored. Grab handles at the bow and stern, as well as molded handles on the side of the Malibu make it easy to carry.

Performance

Although short, the Malibu 9.5 carries speed well. The hull, which is designed for stability in surf or windier conditions, also tracks well through the wind. The width of the Malibu can make it more difficult for smaller framed kayakers to reach the water comfortably, but it makes up for this with stability. You just may need a longer paddle.

The seating system is highly comfortable and supportive, while the range of features make this a highly sought after recreational kayak. The storage options, stacking hulls and locking bars add an element of convenience to this kayak.
