Size, weight, capacity

One of the main selling points of the Caper is just how easy it is to transport. As far as sit-on-top kayaks go, the Caper is lightweight at just 49 lbs. (22.23 kg), easy to throw on the roof of your car or in the back of your truck.

The length of the Caper, 11 ft. (3.4 m), renders it quite a compact model. It’s relatively wide, too, at 31 in. (78.7 cm). These dimensions will initially make you think of it as a more recreational kayak, perhaps one which turns easily and is very relaxed. The Caper does all these things, but it also has a hull designed to track effectively and carry enough speed to make it a viable day tripper.

The Caper is a mid range kayak and has a capacity to match, of 325 lbs. (147.4 kg).

Features

The hull, as we mentioned, is a tri-hull design. The central keel element gives the Caper the ability to track well for the length, while the soft chines give it high levels of stability.

On top of the Caper, the most notable aspect is the Ocean Kayak’s comfort plus seat with an adjustable backrest. It can be folded flat during transport so that it doesn’t get damaged. It can also be removed easily for longer term storage. Ahead of the seat, there are molded footrests, so you can quickly adjust from relaxed to engaged when the environment dictates.

For a kayak that’s just 11 ft. long, the Caper has a good amount of storage. At the rear, the tank well is large enough to fit day tripping or fishing gear, which can be secured with bungee. The hatch at the front is quick to open and reseal and that too is secured in place by bungee.

The two rod holders just behind the seat couple with the storage option to make the Caper a suitable kayak for recreational anglers, or those who want a kayak which can do a bit of everything. The paddle holder on the right hand side of the boat is a useful addition here, too.

Two grab handles on the front and rear, as well as two molded handles on the sides, make the Caper quite easy to carry. On the underside is a skid plate to protect your boat in the long run. There’s also a removable drain bung to empty any water that might get into the hull.

Performance

The Caper is billed as a versatile kayak, and it ticks the boxes there. It arguably leans more towards recreational than any specific purpose, but it can be used for day trips and fishing too.

Despite the length, the Caper carries a decent amount of speed, although it isn’t in the same league as some longer counterparts. While the Caper tracks well in low wind and gentle rivers, it is designed for recreational purposes and may struggle with some more demanding environments, where touring kayaks perform better.

The storage options give you plenty of space for any gear you could need for recreational and angling days out. The seat system is supportive and comfortable enough for you to stay on the water for long days, cruising comfortably.

Overall, the Caper balances the width and length with weight to make a kayak which is easy to transport but can hold its own on recreational trips.
