The Stingray 13.5 Tandem is one of the most popular kayaks produced by Native for many reasons. As one of the few premium tandem kayaks available for around $1,000, the Stingray 13.5 Tandem has the capability to go anywhere on both fresh and saltwater. Users will have no problem controlling this agile kayak thanks to its sleek, narrow design and molded skeg. While the Stingray 13.5 does happen to lack a few of the more popular features found on many Native kayak models, users report that it is worth every penny for those looking to get their hands on a solid tandem kayak that won’t break the bank.

Size and Weight

The Stingray 13.5 Tandem gets its namesake from its 13’6” (411 cm) length. The kayak’s width is listed as 34” (86 cm) and is more than enough to provide ample stability for both users. The kayak is also much lighter than most full-size tandem kayaks. With a fitted hull weight of 80 lbs (36 kg) and a fully-rigged weight of 88 lbs (40 kg), the Stingray 13.5 Tandem is not too heavy for two people to handle with relative ease.

Capacity

One of the only concerns users have with the design of the Stingray 13.5 Tandem is its limited capacity of 475 lbs (215 kg). This capacity doesn’t leave much room for extra gear, but typically provides plenty of performance and stability for two average-sized users.

Features

The Stingray 13.5 Tandem might lack some features that are sought-after in other Native models, but there is no denying that this kayak has everything needed to get anglers where they need to go on the water.

The kayak is able to function in tandem or solo mode as both seats can be removed and one single user can place one single seat atop the molded seat located directly in front of the rear seating cockpit. Many users have noted that the kayak’s performance does not wane when using it in solo mode.

The bow features a 5” dry storage hatch where users can stash away most gear items to keep them safe and secure from water and the natural elements.

There are foot wells molded in throughout the kayak to provide ample foot-resting positions for both front and back users, as well as single users. Located on either side of each removable seat area are two molded drink holders that allow users to place two drinks of their choosing in.

The seats can also be adjusted to face one another for a unique tandem kayak fishing experience, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature.
The seats are among the most comfortable that Native has to offer. Constructed on a sturdy aluminum frame, the seats feature hand-sewn breathable mesh padding that helps users stay dry when it counts the most on sweltering hot days.

There is a second circular 5” dry hatch located directly in front of the middle cockpit area where users can stash extra gear inside. This storage hatch is ideal for camping gear or any other items that won’t overload the kayak’s overall capacity.

Behind the rear seat is a large, open stern storage well that is capable of holding a crate or cooler, as well as many other gear items. The stern well is fitted with bungee cords that allow users to properly secure any items stored on the stern.

There are two paddle holders located on either side of the kayak. Users will also appreciate the large molded handles on the bow and stern that add to the Stingray 13.5 Tandem’s portability.

Users will not, however, find any rod holders, gear tracks, or other features commonly associated with Native kayaks.

Performance

Many users report that the kayak has outstanding stability, even with both anglers standing in choppy water. The kayak’s overall length and width mean it will not have the same speed and agility as other single-user vessels, but the Stingray 13.5 Tandem certainly carries its weight among a tough list of competitors in the tandem kayak arena. The kayak has decent speed when both users are paddling and many anglers report that there is added speed and agility when using the Stingray 13.5 in solo mode.
