Floor Space
The Ozark Trail Hazel Creek 20-Person Cabin Tents’ overall layout is 23’ x 24’6” (701 x 747 cm) laid out in a star shape.
Exterior side rooms
The exterior side sleeping rooms are each approximately 7’ x 6’ (213 x 183 cm) equalling 42 ft² (3.9 m²).
Common area
The pentagonal-shaped common area in the center of the tent is accessible to each exterior room and may be used as a sleeping or shared space. The common area is approximately 14’’ x 12’ (426 x 366 cm) equalling 111ft² (10.3 m²)
Screened Room
An elongated 8’ x 7’6” (244 x229 cm) equalling 61 ft² (5.7 m²) screened room provides a protected entrance or cowboy camping opportunities on the dirt floor.
Total floor space
The total floor space of the interior tent is 279ft² (25.9 m²). The Screened Room/Vestibule adds an additional 61 ft² (5.7 m²) to equal 340ft² (31.6 m²) of usable space. Massive!
Twelve adults can fit comfortably into the tent. The most common use is families of roughly six members or groups of friends.
Head Room
The tent is a Cabin style tent with an Interior Peak Height (IPH) in the Common Area of 7’ (213 cm) and 5’5” (165 cm) in the Exterior Rooms.
Doors and Vestibules
The Ozark Trail Hazel Creek 20-Person Star Tent with Screen room has one primary screen-protected entrance and four secondary entrances. Each group of campers has the ability to use their own entry and exit way to provide maximum privacy.
Primary Entrance
The primary entrance is located on the upper right side of the tent’s star-shaped configuration.
Secondary Entrances
There are four secondary entrances with E-Port’s. The entrances lack rain awnings.
Doorway sizes
Each doorway is “D” shaped and is approximately 4’ x 5’ (122 x 152 cm).
Vestibule
The Ozark Trail Hazel Creek 20-Person Star Tent has a screened porch that may be used as a vestibule or additional sleeping space. The Screened Porch lacks a tent floor and the sides of the Porch are No-see-um mesh. In wet weather, the porch is not a good sleeping option.
Storage
Thankfully, there are many different storage options inside the Ozark Trail Hazel Creek 20-Person Star Tent.
- Four ground-accessible two-section hanging pockets. A pocket is located in each exterior sleeping room.
- Four hanging, three sectional pockets in the common area.
- One gear loft in the center of the common area that’s good for small lightweight items, a cell phone, e-reader, and sunglasses. A hanging loop beneath the gear loft is perfect for a hanging lantern.
- A Hanging Media Pocket with adjustable straps allows for group media playback
Campers will have a great deal of gear storage space should they opt to use the Screened Porch.
Breathability and Ventilation
The rainfly may be removed to allow ventilation via the No-See-Um mesh ceiling. Ten window panels and five different door windows provide cross ventilation.
It would be an improvement to have low-level ventilation ports for humid conditions.
Ventilation Features
Center windows
The common area in the center of the tent lacks windows. If all exterior rooms have closed their windows or engaged their privacy screens, the center area may be a bit warm.
Exterior side windows
There are two mesh windows located in each of the tent’s exterior sections. Each trapezoid-shaped window is approximately 3’ x 4’ x 3’ ( 91 x 12 x 91 cm) which equates to a 10’5” (318 cm) individual window area.
Each window has an interior zippable flap to allow cross ventilation through the tent.
Exterior Doorways
Five exterior doorways contain no-see-um mesh windows that are approximately 3’6” x 4’ (107 x 122 cm) in size. Each doorway window may be zippered open, or the entire doorway may be tied back, to allow cross ventilation.
Primary Entrance Windows
Two trapezoid-shaped no-see-um mesh windows are located on the side walls of the Screened Porch. Each window is approximately 4’ x 5’ x 4’ (122 x 152 x 122 cm) which equates to a 20’ (6.1 m) per window.
Ceiling
The entire rainfly may be removed to allow additional airflow.
Weather Resistance
The Ozark Trail Hazel Creek 20-Person Star Tent has a higher price point than other similar-sized Ozark Trail tents, but the higher cost benefits become apparent when we compare the weather resistance values.
Wind resistance
A cabin tent is all about luxuriating in a huge protected space. A large tent gives the wind a lot of different areas to grab onto. We don’t recommend heading out for a weekend in windy weather.
We do recommend that you beef up your exterior stakes with something a little heartier. User reviews mention the fiberglass tent poles snapping and the lack of Guy Lines for the Primary entrance. We suggest that pick up extra Guy Lines and a fiberglass tent pole replacement kit.
Rain resistance
The Ozark Trail Hazel Creek 20-Person Star Tent is manufactured from recycled Polyester Taffeta with a thread count of 185 and hydrostatic head (HH) water resistance value of 1200mm. The HH value is double the water resistance value from the comparably sized Ozark Trail 20-Person 4-Room Cabin Tent. We’re pleased to see the higher HH value. It will help keep you and your gear drier in wet weather conditions.
Ozark Trail recommends that you seal the interior seams on the tent. We’d recommend this step when you initially set up your tent. Allow the seam sealer to dry for 24 hours before you pack the tent away.
Rainfly
The removable rainfly seams were taped for water resistance at the Ozark factory. The rainfly covers the tent ceiling and the Screened Porch Primary entryway.
Windows
User reviews indicate that the exterior sectional windows zip close on the edge of the windows, but lack any method to seal out the weather at the top of the window. This leads to rainwater encroaching inside the tent.
Durability
We believe that higher HH water resistance values will go a long way towards extending the lifetime of the Ozark Trail Hazel Creek 20-Person Star Tent.
We note far fewer user complaints about ripped fabric when compared to the Ozark Trail 20-Person 4-Room Cabin Tent.
There are still user reviews indicating issues with the tent poles, so we do recommend being prepared for shattered or broken fiberglass poles.
Tent Floor
The tent floor is constructed from Polyethylene. We suggest clearing loose rocks, debris, and twigs from the ground before erecting the tent. A ground cloth will help protect the tent floor and increase the durability of the tent.
Poles
The Ozark Trail Hazel Creek 20-Person Star Tent has fifteen fiberglass and seven steel poles that are both color-coded and preconnected.

The Ozark Trail Hazel Creek 20-Person Star Tent is an external frame tent with a gigantic footprint. While we love spur-of-the-moment camping trips, you may need to plan ahead a little bit with a tent of this size. The size of this tent is larger than many camping sites. We suggest a ground footprint of at least 30’ x 30’ (9.1 m x 9.1 m) in size.
How to Set up the Ozark Trail Hazel Creek 20-Person Star Tent
- Place the tent on the ground and stretch it out.
- Open the door zippers to allow airflow as you raise the tent.
- Stake down opposite corners of the tent after pulling the tent floor snugly. Work your way around the tent, back and forth to the opposite sides. Set the stakes at a 45-degree angle.
- Extend the fifteen pre-connected fiberglass poles.
- The five dark grey matching poles are the main roof poles.
- The five equal-length blue poles are the roof eave poles.
- The four longest light grey poles are the external room poles
- The remaining dark grey pole is the Porch Screen room pole
- Insert the five main roof poles through the grey roof pole sleeves at the center of the top of the tent and then connect them to the 5-way center hub
- Gently flex the fiberglass poles and insert them into the five eave joints
- Thread the five blue eave poles through the blue sleeves on the edge of the tent
- Insert the eave poles into all five of the eave joints. Verify that the fiberglass poles are entirely inserted in the eave joints.
- Extend the seven steel poles
- The five longer poles are the main upright poles
- The remaining two poles are for the screen room and upright pole
- Insert the end of one of the steel poles into the opening of the four-way eave hub and the other corresponding pin at the base of the tent. Repeat the process on the remaining steel poles.
- Locate the light grey pole sleeves and insert the side room poles through them.
- Flex the poles into an arch and connect them at the base of the tent. Click the plastic hooks onto the frame. Repeat for the other entrances.
- Insert the front entry fiberglass pole through the grey sleeve at the front of the Screened Porch
- Insert the bottom of the upright poles into the opening of the plastic corner joint and set the pins
- Zip the screened porch door closed and then extend and stake the screened porch Guy lines
- Unfold and drape the rainfly over the primary tent entrance. Align the large dark grey triangle with the dark grey edge of the Screened Porch Room. Extend the fly over the tent ceiling
- Connect the rainfly to the tent with the pre-attached Velcro straps
- The rainfly has preattached Guy lines that should be extended and staked
- Adjust the Guy line sliders to increase tension.
