Weather Protection
The season and weather you go camping in has a significant impact on the type of tent you buy. It’s a waste to spend more money on a 4-season tent when you go camping in spring and summer.
Some tips when looking at the tent features in terms of weather protection:
- 3-season tents are ideal for fall, spring, and summer, while 4-season tents can be used in winter too.
- Look at the hydrostatic (or waterproof) rating of the tent: 1000 mm is good for light rain; 1500 mm to 3000 mm is good for moderate to heavier rain.
- See what materials are used in the tent’s construction. Polyester is quite durable and easy to maintain. It can be water-resistant or waterproof, depending on whether it’s been PU coated. Canvas is great for insulation and regulating temperatures. Steel and aluminum poles are stronger and more durable than fiberglass poles.
