Bending Branches Paddles in 2022: the Ultimate Guide and Reviews

Since making their first paddle in 1982, Bending Branches have been striving to enhance paddlers’ experiences on the water. Based in Wisconsin, the foundation of a white water and touring canoeist and a flat water racer meant that Bending Branches were always destined to make efficient, ergonomic paddles for long days on the water.

There’s a little technical jargon involved when we talk about paddles, so if you’re not familiar with paddle design, take a look at our Kayak Paddle Buying Guide.

Bending Branches have ergonomically designed the shaft with a slight oval shape to fit paddlers’ hands comfortably. The paddle remains light enough to drive the boat effectively through the water.

The long blades of the slice series make for a clean and effective paddle stroke and the materials give them enough flex to be comfortable and durable in all conditions.

The Hybrid plus has the same ovalised shaft as the Slice Hybrid Snap, designed for comfort and grip over long periods. However, unlike the Snap, the ferrule in the centre of the Hybrid Plus is fully adjustable. You have a 15 cm range of movement to extend and shorten your paddle on the go, and the option of as many different degrees of feather as you could ever need.

These blades, just like the rest of the Slice range, are a composite creation which is stiff and strong, designed for clean entry and a light swing on the recovery to minimize your fatigue.

Wooden Recreational Kayak Paddles

Wooden paddles: they’re part of paddling history, right? Bending Branches certainly don’t think so and their wooden range of paddles have us agreeing with them. While wooden blades may not have the same inherent strength or rock-bashing capabilities of their plastic counterparts, there’s something about paddling with a wooden blade which triggers a primal part of you as a kayaker.

Perhaps it’s how warm and comfortable it is to hold, even on cold days, or maybe it’s how buoyant they are, making it easy to roll and link fluid strokes together. Then again, it might be that you can cruise without a sound as you silently reach your paddle into the water, or recover it ready to go again.  Whatever it is, they’re an awesome way to explore the water, and we love them.

Bending Branches Impression

The Impression is Bending Branches’ only all-wood paddle, but it isn’t quite all-wooden. The snap button ferrule in the centre is a composite design to prevent corrosion or seizing up. This ferrule allows you to choose between 0 degrees, or 60 degrees either right, or left handed. Beyond that, this wooden paddle has all the natural flexibility you would expect which helps to prevent injuries and straining when you’re on the water.

The blades themselves are a shorter, wider design, perfect for generating power and remaining maneuverable. The Impression is an ideal recreational paddle for those who want something a bit special, and Bending Branches know that recreational paddling often takes place in lakes and rivers which hide many rocks or shingly banks. The tips of the blades are coated with a rock guard edging to help keep your paddle in pristine condition for longer.

Blade Dimensions: 6.75 x 18 in. (17 x 46 cm)
Ferrule Angles:  0° & 60° (L or R)

When your youngsters take to the water, it’s important that they have a paddle they’re comfortable with. The Splash is designed with smaller paddlers in mind, but is also a paddle they can grow into as they get more and more comfortable on the water.

Long, narrow, asymmetric blades make this paddle really easy to pull through the water so your kids can propel their boat tirelessly, but it’s also a blade design which allows them to link paddle strokes together as they gain confidence and knowledge.

The plastic blades and aluminum shaft are designed to be robust, but lightweight, and can withstand all the throwing around, landing on and rock bashing that kids can throw at them. The Splash is comfortable and easy for smaller hands to grip, and comes with an adjustable snap-button. This allows your kids to start paddling with an easy-to-use flat paddle, but then evolve into using a feathered paddle if and when they choose to.

Kayak Fishing Paddles

Like most disciplines within kayaking, angling comes with its own set of tools and equipment specific to the sport. Kayak fishing paddles tend to be longer than recreational paddles, allowing you to comfortably paddle over the sides of a wider, stable fishing platform. They are also jam packed with features to make your fishing experience more successful.

Bending Branches Angler Rise

Bending Branches Angler Rise

Shaft Material: Aluminium
Blade Material: Polypropylene
Lengths: 230 cm / 240 cm / 250 cm / 260 cm

89 sq. in. (574 sq. cm)
Blade Dimensions: 6.75 x 18 in. (17 x 46 cm)
Ferrule Angles: 0° & 60° (L or R)

This is essentially the fishing version of the Whisper. The Angler Rise is a basic, two piece paddle made from incredibly durable aluminum, with polypropylene blades.

Simple doesn’t mean inefficient, though, and the Angler Rise has smooth entry asymmetric blades, designed to help beginners cruise comfortably through the water with direct power, rather than the cruising prowess of some of Bending Branches’ higher end paddles. The blades also hold the only real fishing specific feature on the Angler Rise; the hook retrieval system.

The two piece construction allows you to choose your angle, whether you want flat paddles, or a right or left handed feather and the snug pop-button closure prevents any wobble, while coming apart easily enough that you can transport the Angler Rise easily.

Bending Branches Angler Scout

Bending Branches Angler Scout

Shaft Material: Aluminium
Blade Material: epX Engineered Polymer, Fibreglass Reinforced
Lengths: 220 cm / 230 cm / 240 cm / 250 cm / 260 cm
Weight: 36 oz. (1021 g)

95 sq. in. (613 sq. cm)
Blade Dimensions: 6.9 x 17.5 in. (18 x 44 cm)
Ferrule Angles: 0° & 60° (L or R)

Built to endure the bumps in the road and to be a long-lasting, wallet friendly kayak paddle, the Angler Scout is as tough as they come.

The blades are made from the same high quality epX engineered polymer as Bending Branches use in their recreational blades, which balance strength against weight. The shaft is made from ovalised aluminium, much more ergonomically designed than the traditional round shaft, this is easy to hold and to drive the boat from, while remaining strong and lightweight enough that you don’t worry about beating it up a bit.

The shaft has the same snap-button ferrule as many of Bending Branches’ paddles, with the options of flat blades or a 60 degree feather either direction.

In terms of fishing features, there’s a hook retrieval system on one of the blades, and a 40 inch tape measure on the shaft.

Bending Branches Angler Classic Snap-Button

nches Angler Classic Snap-Button

Shaft Material: Fibreglass
Blade Material: epX Engineered Polymer, Fibreglass Reinforced

According to Bending Branches, the Angler Classic is the best-selling kayak fishing paddle on the market. This staple of kayak angling has all the blade durability and ease of the Angler Scout, but with a flexible, lightweight fibreglass shaft.

While not quite as unbreakable as its aluminium counterpart, the fibreglass is still incredibly durable and is a much more comfortable option while paddling, especially if you’re planning on going some distance before you start fishing.

The blades are still the strong, but stiff epX engineered polymer, with fibreglass reinforcement, and are still a great balance of direct power and smooth transition strokes and recovery.

Along the fibreglass shaft is a 40 inch tape measure, complete with cm markings, to check how impressive your catch is, and there’s also a hook retrieval system on the left blade.

The snap-button design gives you options for your paddle, but also allows you to transport it in two pieces to make getting to the water that much easier.

What could be better than the industry leading angling paddle? The incredible versatility and infinite feather options that come with the telescopic ferrule in the Angler Classic Plus, that’s what.

This is the very top end of the Bending Branches entry level range for kayak fishing, and is arguably a step above entry level. A flexible fibreglass shaft, connected in the centre by the ferrule we’ve mentioned already, makes for a wobble free paddling experience, but has enough flex to stop  you getting sore wrists over a long trip.

The blades are fluid enough to allow you to cruise decent distances, but robust enough that you don’t need to worry if you’re fighting your way around windy shorelines or rocky rivers.

Along the shaft is a tape measure, just remember that you might have to account for an adjusted ferrule overcompensating for the length of your catch. There’s also a hook retrieval system on the left paddle blade.

The fully carbon shaft is stiff and lightweight, too, and makes using this paddle an absolute dream.

The hook retrieval system and shaft tape measure are useful fishing additions to this paddle, but first and foremost it’s an effective and powerful means to move your boat around.

How do you make the Angler Pro even better? You make it out of the lightest materials available. The Angler Pro Carbon is the top end of Bending Branches’ fishing kayak paddles, and delivers unmatched drive and direction with it’s stiff and responsive build.

Carbon blades are perhaps not as strong as the fibreglass or nylon alternatives, but their stiffness makes for a clean catch and release of the water, as well as a fully engaged driving stroke to maximise your propulsion, even in a fully laden boat.

Coupled with a fully carbon shaft, this really is a lightweight paddle. Those who are going really long distances regularly might benefit from a slightly more flexible paddle to protect their wrists, but for most anglers this carbon design is all the paddle they could ever want, and more.

This is a no-frills paddle, but it does exactly what it needs to for cruising around a lake and also has a tip guard so that you don’t need to worry so much if you bump it off a few rocks.

Bending Branches’ ‘classic’ palm grip is directional and ergonomically designed to fit comfortably into the palm of your hand, allowing you to balance power and grace as you paddle.

Lightweight and flexible, this is an easy to use paddle with a straightforward blade design that you can’t get wrong. The smooth varnished finish makes recovery strokes slick and planting the paddle an easier and quieter part of the stroke.

At the tip of the paddle is a tip protector, so you don’t need to worry quite so much as you launch off the beach, or if you bump off a rock or two as you meander down a gentle river.

More versatile than other deep water blade designs, like the traditional otter tail paddles, the Beavertail is a graceful balance of control strokes and forward power.

The additional length isn’t just good for going forwards. The extra length helps with sweep strokes and maximises control of your boat, while the multi-directional freestyle palm grip just adds to the enormous versatility of this paddle.

High quality design, beautifully finished and easy to use; this is a lot of paddle for your buck!

The traditional square blade is straightforward to use in so many ways, providing good direct power as well as easy turning strokes, but with the capabilities of some finite paddlework too.

Starting from the blade, the BB Special has the teardrop shape that you see on the Bending Branches higher end paddles. This gives you a powerful catch when you start your paddle stroke, while flowing seamlessly through strokes and linking them together easily.

The ovalised shaft and classic palm grip make this paddle extremely comfortable to hold, even on long days on the water, while the tip protection means you can keep paddling with the BB Special for years.

This is the first in the Bending Branches line to have the 11 degree bend at the base of the shaft, giving you a longer, cleaner catch of the water and a much more efficient open water paddle stroke.

This paddle is also ridiculously robust, with a fibreglass blade wrap around the layers of laminated hardwood, and a full rock guard protection around the outside of the blade helps it withstand bashes and bumps on rivers and during launching or landing.

The Catalyst is created from offcuts, remnants of hardwood from the high quality paddles that Bending Branches make, creating a sustainable option for paddlers who consider the natural environment to be of utmost importance.

Just because they’re made from a lot of parts doesn’t mean that the Catalyst isn’t the same high quality, durable blade you would expect from Bending Branches. These are strength tested to the same standards as all other paddles and the blades are designed to be as fluid and efficient as possible.

The ovalised shaft and palm grips are just as comfortable as always, so you can paddle with the Catalyst all day long, or on long trips where the durability and rock guard protection become even more important.

The Catalyst is available in either a straight shaft, with the freestyle palm grip, or with an 11 degree bend in the shaft and the classic palm grip, depending on your needs and preference.

Shaft Material: Solid Basswood
Blade Material: Basswood & Roasted Basswood
Lengths: 48 in. / 50 in. / 52 in. / 54 in.
Weight: 19 oz. (539 g)
Blade Surface Area:
118 sq. in. (761 sq. cm)
Blade Dimensions:  8.1 x 19 in. (21 x 48 cm)

The lightest all wooden canoe paddle available, but still an absolute machine when it comes to driving your boat through the water efficiently. The Java has a thin but powerful blade, which allows you to quickly recover your stroke and keep driving the boat forward.

This smooth transition also makes turning strokes and fine skills easy, as the paddle dances through the water, while the spectacular pin-striping design not only maximises strength but is certain to turn heads wherever you’re paddling.

A solid basswood shaft replaces the more common laminated basswood, to lighten the load and keep the flex and power you want from a wooden canoe blade.

With a fibreglass coating and rock protection around the blade, this paddle will endure some hardships on the water, taking its share of knocks along the way.

The Java is available in either straight shaft, with the freestyle palm grip, or with an 11 degree bend and the classic palm grip.

Bending Branches Expedition Plus

Bending Branches Expedition Plus

Shaft Material: 18-Laminate Basswood
Blade Material: Red Alder, Basswood & Roasted Basswood
Lengths: 52 in. / 54 in. / 56 in. / 58 in. / 60 in.
Weight: 24 oz. (680 g)
Blade Surface Area:
126 sq. in. (813 sq. cm)
Blade Dimensions: 8.2 x 19 in. (21 x 48 cm)

This handcrafted paddle is ridiculously strong, designed to withstand expedition paddling on white water rivers up to class III. The Expedition may not be your fluid stroke for the most finesse you can muster, but it’s the one you will want with you when you’re battling through the wilderness on a multi day trip.

Beyond the incredibly strong design itself, the blade is wrapped in fibreglass, then a rock guard is fitted not just around the blade, but 6 inches up the shaft too, so you can really beat this thing around and it will still come back for more.

Bending Branches have thought of everything. The square shape of the paddle is direct and powerful, making it perfect for moving water, but by rounding the corners at the bottom they have limited the chances of chipping away at the paddle.

The T-Grip at the top is designed for power. You can generate more direct power and hold on through whirling white water much more easily with a t-grip than with a palm grip, but you can still perform turning strokes and fluid movements with ease.

Bending Branches Viper

Bending Branches Viper

Shaft Material: 18-Laminate Basswood
Blade Material: Basswood & Roasted Basswood
Lengths: 48 in. / 50 in. / 52 in. / 54 in.

Blade Dimensions: 8.7 x 19 in. (22 x 48 cm)

Durable, smooth and graceful, the Viper is an open water tripper’s dream. The double bend in the shaft goes beyond the 11 degrees, which keeps the blade engaged for longer, by keeping your wrists in alignment through the stroke. This protection means that you’ll be able to paddle for longer, not only on any given day, but over your lifetime.

The wide blade pulls easily through the water, generating maximum power in a short space of time, so you don’t have to waste any energy as you cruise along your local lake or down a long and winding river.

The rock guard protection and fibreglass wrap mean your paddle will last longer, even with a bump or two along the way.

Weight: 17 oz. (482 g)
Blade Surface Area:
99 sq. in. (639 sq. cm)
Blade Dimensions: 8.2 x 17 in. (21 x 43 cm)

Combining the fluidity and flexibility of the long standing wooden paddles, with state-of-the-art composite technology, the Sunburst is a paddle designed for canoeing elitists. While the blade itself is smaller and sleeker than many others in the range, the composite design means you certainly won’t be lacking in power.

The blade itself, while shorter, is a powerful, smooth design with its striking Sunburst effect. The strength of the design is then augmented by a fibreglass wrap and a rock guard strip around the edge.

A carbon shaft means that along with the flex and fluidity of a wooden blade, you get the direct drive and stiffness of carbon fibre. This shaft is ergonomically designed to fit comfortably into your hand, as well as being incredibly strong and light.

Keeping this balancing act in mind, the grip is a crossover t-grip and palm grip, so you get the direct drive and control from a t-grip, but the freedom of movement and versatility that comes from a palm grip.

The Sunburst really is a masterpiece of a paddle, with a price tag to match. This may not be a paddle for the recreational user, but for those who value it’s balanced approach, it will perform incredibly well.

This is available in either a straight shaft, or a bent 11 degree option with an asymmetric grip.
